Newfoundland & Labrador’s 2018 Minimum Wage Rate Increase

The Newfoundland & Labrador 2018 Minimum Wage Peel ‘N Post reflects the minimum wage rate increase effective April 1, 2018:

  • Minimum wage rate increase to $11.15 per hour
  • Overtime rate $16.73 (1.5 times the minimum wage rate)

Future Newfoundland and Labrador minimum wage rate increases will take effect on April 1 of each year based on the percentage change in the National Consumer Price Index.  The 2018 Newfoundland and Labrador minimum wage increase announcement can be downloaded at http://www.releases.gov.nl.ca/releases/2018/aesl/0220n03.aspx.

Payment of Wages

When should employees be paid?  The employer must pay an employee not less frequently than half monthly. All wages owing must be paid within 7 days of the end of the pay period.

How is an employee to be paid?  The employer must pay the wages:

  • at the place of employment during regular working hours
  • at the employee’s normal residence
  • by mail
  • personal delivery
  • by direct deposit into the employee’s bank account with the employee’s consent

What are the approved forms of payment? The wage must be paid in a lawful Canadian currency or:

  • by cheque
  • money order
  • by direct deposit into the employee’s bank account

Minimum Wage Posting Requirement

Section 31(2) of the Newfoundland & Labrador Labour Standards Act requires an employer to whom the regulations made under section 27 of the Act applies to post and keep posted a copy of the regulations in a conspicuous place where employees are engaged in their duties.
