What does the City of Half Moon Bay, CA Minimum Wage Ordinance provide?

The City of Half Moon Bay, CA Minimum Wage Ordinance requires businesses to pay their employees who work within the geographical city limits no less than the City’s effective minimum wage rate. The Half Moon Bay, CA minimum wage is adjusted for inflation based on the regional Consumer Price Index (CPI) on January 1st of each year. The Half Moon Bay minimum wage rate applies to employees who work at least two hours per week for a business located in the City.

The only exception is an employee who is a Learner, as defined by the California Industrial Welfare Commission Order No. 4-2001, who “during their first 160 hours of employment in occupations in which they have no previous similar or related experience,” shall be paid no less than 85 percent of the applicable Minimum Wage for the first 160 hours of employment. Thereafter, the employee shall be paid the applicable Minimum Wage Rate.

Who must post the Half Moon Bay, California Minimum Wage Poster?

  • Every employer that employs workers at a facility located in the City of Half Moon Bay is required to post in a conspicuous place at any workplace or job site where any employee works the notice published by the City informing employees of the current Minimum Wage rate and of their rights under law. (Half Moon Bay Muni. Code, § 3.300.050).
  • The official Minimum Wage notice is required to be posted in both English and Spanish.
  • Failure to post the notice constitutes a violation of the law.
  • Employers are also required to maintain payroll records for their Half Moon Bay employees for at least 3 years and make them accessible to the City to monitor compliance.
