What is the California SB-198 Injury and Illness Prevention Policy Poster?

The poster is a Model Policy Statement that organizations can adopt, post, and implement as part of their required Illness and Injury Prevention Program. The Model Policy Statement was developed by Cal/OSHA and is published in Cal/OSHA’s Guide to Developing Your Workplace Injury and Illness Prevention Program.

What does the California SB-198 Injury and Illness Prevention Policy Poster communicate?

The poster expresses the intent of the organization to follow all laws and implement best practices to achieve safe and healthful working conditions. Further, it describes how the organization’s safety and health program will achieve that goal. This includes:

  • Prioritizing the prevention of occupationally induced injuries and illnesses over operation productivity;
  • Requiring employees’ cooperation in detecting and reporting workplace hazards;
  • Encouraging a cooperative attitude among co-workers regarding illness and injury prevention;
  • The organization’s goal of zero accident and injuries and how the organization’s safety and health program will support that goal; and
  • Basic safety and health responsibilities of the employer, supervisors, and employees.

Why post?

In California, every employer is required by law (California Labor Code Section §6400) to provide a safe and healthful workplace for his/her employees. Title 8 (T8), of the California Code of Regulations (CCR), requires every California employer to have an effective Injury and Illness Prevention Program in writing that must be in accord with 8 CCR § 3203 of the General Industry Safety Orders. The Model Policy Statement can be incorporated into your IIPP program and posted in the workplace to demonstrate management’s genuine commitment to employee safety and health and engaging your employees in matters of workplace safety and health.
