The City of New York Dining Dog Rules Poster informs patrons that companion dogs are welcome in certain outdoor dining areas of the food establishment. Food establishments may allow companion dogs under the following conditions:

  • companion dogs and owners must access the outdoor dining area from the exterior of the establishment.
  • companion dogs are not allowed on chairs, benches, seats, or other fixtures.
  • all food and drinks must be prepared in the interior of the establishment.
  • food and water provided to companion dogs must be in single-use disposable containers.
  • food employees cannot have direct contact with companion dogs while on duty.
  • the outdoor dining area is maintained clean, and surfaces that have been contaminated with dog excrement or other bodily fluids are immediately cleaned and sanitized.
  • the companion dog owner controls the dog.

Food establishment is defined as “any business which has areas, including outdoor seating areas, in which food is sold for on-premises consumption.”

Posting Requirements

Food establishments in New York City that allow dogs that are not service dogs in outdoor dining areas must display this poster at or near the entrance of the establishment. (24 RCNY § 32-03) Food establishments that choose not to allow dogs, other than service dogs, to accompany their owners are not required to display this poster.
