How to Prevent Heat Illness

  • Have all athletes undergo a physical exam before participating in the activity
  • Take body weight before/after exercise (determines loss of fluids)
  • Ensure athletes are drinking water/keeping hydrated during the activity
  • Inform athletes of risk factors
  • Substitute athletes regularly during hot/humid days
  • Know what to do if an emergency arises

How to Respond to Symptoms

  • Move athlete to a cool shaded area
  • Loosen/remove heavy clothing
  • Have athlete drink cool water
  • Cool athletes body by fanning or spraying with cool mist
  • Place ice packs under the arms/groin
  • If medical assistance is necessary, call 911 and provide first aid
