Alberta, Canada Minimum Wage Rate Increases Sept. 1

This year, Alberta employers and their employees will see several important changes to the Alberta All-On-One™ Labor Law Poster.  Specifically, the poster has been updated to reflect that:

  • the provincial minimum wage rate will increase 25 cents per hour to $10.20 per hour effective September 1, 2014.  The minimum wage for liquor servers will increase to $9.20 per hour.  Currently, the general minimum wage rate is $9.95 per hour and the rate for liquor servers is $9.05 per hour
  • Alberta has enacted legislation providing employees Compassionate Care Leave. The leave provides up to eight weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to care for a gravely ill family member
  • the Occupational Health Safety Act now provides for administrative penalties up to $10,000/day for occupational health and safety violations.  The parties against whom penalties may be applied include an employer, worker, contractor, prime contractor or supplier
  • the qualifications for Employment Insurance regular benefits has been rephrased to require that the claimant be “employed in insurable employment”
