Is it time for a refresher course in employment verification?
All new hires, including both citizens and noncitizens, need to prove they are eligible to work in the United States. Employment eligibility is verified through two systems: completion of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, and the internet-based E-Verify program. Form I-9 is required for all new employees and all businesses. E-Verify is voluntary for most businesses. E-Verify does not replace the I-9 and each program requires different supporting documentation.
It is imperative that employers follow the required employment verification processes accurately and on time. Following the required formats can be tricky, rules may have changed, and the penalties for mistakes can be costly. The USCIS free webinars can bring employers up to speed on new rules, ensure they are using proper documentation, and inform them of how to handle special circumstances in the process.
Employers can download the USCIS’ September webinar schedule, including the quick-start 30-minute training webinars, here. The USCIS website also provides a number of individualized tools, tips to avoid common mistakes, forms, free guidance manuals, and e-filing access. Information about Form I-9 can be found here. E-Verify information can be found here.
