Columbia First City in Missouri to Approve “Ban the Box”

The city of Columbia is the first city in Missouri to pass the “ban the box” ordinance. The ordinance that took effect December 1st was designed to make it easier for people with prior criminal backgrounds to compete in the job market. Employers in Columbia are now prohibited from asking applicants about criminal histories or conducting background checks before making a job offer. However, there is an exemption for employers that due to local, state or federal laws are required to exclude people with certain criminal convictions.

Both public and private employers must review and revise their employment applications to stay compliant. The ordinance violation may result in a fine of up to $1,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 30 days. For more information, see ordinance here.
