Effective January 1, 2017, Florida’s Broward County has updated its Living Wage notice. This poster is required to be prominently posted at job sites operated by service providers operating in Broward County that have been awarded a living wage contract.
The living wage which must be paid differs depending on whether or not the employer also provides health insurance. With qualifying health benefits amounting to at least $1.56 per hour, the wage rate is $12.03 per hour. Without qualifying health benefits, the wage rate is $13.59. To qualify, health coverage must include wellness and preventative services, including maternity care.
These wages must be provided to County employees, as well as employees of service contractors operating under County service contracts exceeding $100,000 and providing services including food preparation, routine maintenance services, clerical or other non-supervisory office work, and landscaping work. As of 2016, this extends to providers of covered services within the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport terminal and associated car rental center.
Broward County’s living wage is the result of a 2002 ordinance which set the wage rate for covered employees at $9.57 with qualifying health benefits and $10.82 without. The living wage is adjusted annually in accordance with the Consumer Price Index for Urban Consumers (CPI-U). Broward County’s living wage exceeds Florida’s minimum wage, which in 2017 increased to $8.10 per hour for non-tipped workers.
The Broward County Living Wage notice displays the wage rates for 2017 as well as a partial list of covered services. It also provides information on enforcement action or sactions which may occur if a covered service contractor fails to pay the required living wage.
