This fall, most of Alberta’s minimum wage workers will enjoy a raise in their hourly earnings. Effective September 1, 2013, the general minimum wage will rise from the current rate of $9.75 per hour to $9.95 per hour. The minimum wage for salespersons will increase from $389 per week to $397 per week. Each year, Alberta’s general minimum wage rate is adjusted using a formula based on earnings averages and the Consumer Price Index. This year, the averages rose 2.1 percent.

However, minimum wage for liquor servers will remain $9.05 per hour. This is because Alberta operates under a two-tiered minimum wage system introduced in 2011. The system is based on the assumption that bartenders’ and servers’ tips make up for the difference between wage rates. The minimum wage for persons that serve liquor will not rise until the general minimum wage reaches $10.05 per hour. Following that, both rates will increase in tandem and have a $1 difference. As always, employers are free to set their own wage rates above the minimum wage rates.
