Connecticut’s governor has signed many bills during this 2014 legislative session. One of the most notable concerns increases to the minimum wage.
Senate Bill 32, An Act Concerning Working Families’ Wages takes effect July 1, 2014. The bill calls for increases to Connecticut’s minimum wage. The state minimum hourly wage will increase from $8.70 to $9.15 per hour on January 1, 2015. Prior law called for the January 1, 2015 increase to sit at $9.00. With this new enactment that increase goes up by 15 additional cents to the $9.15 per hour rate. Then on January 1, 2016 the rate increases again to $9.60 per hour and on January 1, 2017 it increases again to $10.10 per hour.
The act does not change the “tip credit” allowed by law. Under the law employers may pay learners, beginners, and people younger than age 18 at a rate equal to 85% of the minimum wage for their first 200 hours of employment.
The act effectively increases the learner’s wage from $7.40 to $7.78 in 2015, $8.16 in 2016 and $8.59 in 2017.
These amendments are effective July 1, 2014. Compliance Poster Company’s HR Research and Compliance Department has updated Connecticut products.
