This month, many employees in Daly City, California will see more money in their paychecks. That’s because last month, Daly City became the 19th municipality in the San Francisco Bay Area to pass an ordinance establishing a minimum wage rate that exceeds the state’s minimum wage rate.
Daly City’s first minimum wage hike goes into effect on February 13, 2019, and increases each January 1 thereafter until January 1, 2022, when the minimum wage rate will be adjusted for inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The minimum wage rate is applicable to all employers regardless of size. It covers any employee who works two or more hours per week within the geographic boundaries of the City.

In addition to posting the official Daly City Minimum Wage Poster each year, employers of covered employees are required to give each current employee and each new hire written notice of their rights under the new law. An employee who believes his or her rights have been violated may file a civil action against the employer or a complaint with the City. Such an employee may be reinstated and/or receive back pay, injunctive relief and civil penalties.
In all probability, Daly City will not be the last Northern California city to establish a $15.00 minimum wage rate before the statewide $15.00 minimum wage rate takes effect. The City of Fremont is currently ironing out its minimum wage ordinance raising the minimum wage rate to $15.00 per hour for large employers by 2020 and for small employers by 2021. Efforts are also being made to raise local minimum wage rates in Novato, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, and Sonoma.
