At first thought, many would wonder why administering the Heimlich Maneuver wouldn’t be effective if someone were choking. It’s not a cut and dry as you might think. While its always best to administer proper first aid techniques and follow procedures outlined in an adult choke saving poster, in one particular case, a choking adult was correctly given the Heimlich Maneuver with no results.
The woman who had choked on her food after eating, could not breath and lost consciousness after several attempts to be reviewed by abdominal thrusts. The woman was then laid down on the floor and given chest compressions. Within 30 seconds, the woman started breathing again, though still unconscious.
The chest compression successfully removed the object from the woman’s airway where the Heimlich Maneuver had not. It was also concluded in a case study that standard chest compressions are potentially more effective for the management of complete airway obstruction by a foreign body in someone who is unconscious.
