Last Spring, wage legislation was passed in West Virginia amending the state’s Minimum Wage law to provide for increases minimum wage rate beginning January 1, 2015. The state’s mandatory Minimum Wage posting has been revised to reflect the minimum wage rate increases in two stages:
- Beginning January 1, 2015, the minimum wage rate will increase to $8.00 per hour
- Beginning January 1, 2016, the minimum wage rate will increase to $8.75 per hour
- Beginning January 1, 2015, the minimum training wage rate will increase to $6.40 per hour
- Beginning January 1, 2015, the maximum tip credit is 70%, or $5.60 per hour, against the required minimum wage rate, resulting in a reduced hourly wage rate of at least $2.40 per hour
- Beginning January 1, 2016, the maximum tip credit is 70%, or $6.13 per hour, resulting in a reduced hourly wage rate of at least $2.62 per hour
The state’s minimum wage rate last increased in 2008 when the minimum wage reached its current level of $7.25 per hour. Until the new law takes effect, an employer is permitted a credit of 20% of the required minimum wage. Until Jan. 1, 2015, the training is $5.15 per hour.
