Job Safety and Health Protection – What changed?
The Job Safety and Health Protection notice describes the requirements of the Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) law. Starting in 2018, mandatory civil penalties for violations of VOSH will be adjusted each year for increases in the cost of living.
The Job Safety and Health Protection notice has been revised to reflect new maximum penalty amounts effective as of August 1, 2018. The maximum penalty levels are $12,726 for serious, other-than-serious, and per-day failure to abate violation and $127,254 for willful or repeated violations. The revision date on the notice has been updated to read August, 2018.
Every employer is required to post the Virginia Job Safety and Health Protection notice in a conspicuous place where notices to employees are usually posted. It must be kept in good repair and in unobstructed view. (16 V.A.C. 25-60-40).
Federal Earned Income Tax Credit – What changed?
The Virginia Department of Social Services (DSS) previously provided IRS Publication 4718 to fulfill the requirement that employers post information regarding the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The department now provides IRS Publication 962, “Life’s a Little Easier with EITC.”
The Earned Income Tax Credit notice is intended to help employees figure out whether they qualify for the EITC. The notice provides information on the rules to claim the credit, the income levels at which employees may qualify for the 2017 tax year, common errors to avoid, and how employees can access more information on the EITC.
Every employer is required to post any notice provided by the DSS which informs employees that they may be eligible for federal and state earned income tax credits and may apply for the credit on their tax returns or receive the credit in advance payments during the year. (Code of Virginia, § 40.1-28.7:3)
