National Food Allergy Awareness Week is May 11-17

According to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) over 15 million Americans live with food allergies, including those at risk for life-threatening anaphylaxis. So what happens that some individuals suffer from food allergies and how does it work? Food allergies result from ingestion of food that the immune system mistakenly attacks as a food protein. Suddenly chemicals are released, including histamine, which produce the symptoms of an allergic reaction. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and are potentially life-threatening. Individuals can be allergic to any food, but there are eight main culprits that cause 90% of food- allergic reactions.

They are:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Tree Nuts
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Wheat
  • Soy

Unfortunately, the number of people who suffer from the condition is growing. In fact, studies show the number of people who have the condition grew between 1997 and 2011. Prevention is paramount because there is no cure for suffers of food allergies.

In an effort to prevent food allergy reactions the federal government, states and cities have enacted legislation requiring food establishments/restaurants to display food allergy posters in staff areas where food is prepared. Click on the links below to purchase these mandatory-to-post posters.
