What’s new?
General Minimum Wage Order (MW-24) – Reflects the inflation-adjusted minimum wage rate, meals and lodging credits, and recent legislation.
- As of January 1, 2024, the minimum wage rate is $16.00 per hour.
- Effective April 1, 2024, Fast Food Restaurant employers must pay the minimum wage required pursuant to Labor Code § 1474, et. seq.
- Effective June 1, 2024, Healthcare Facility employers must pay the minimum wage specified under Labor Code § 1182.14.
Paid Sick Leave – Reflects legislation increasing the minimum amount of paid sick leave to 40 hours or 5 days per year, effective January 1, 2024.
- Use of paid sick leave carried over from a prior year may be capped at 80 hours or 10 days.
- No accrual or carryover is required if the employer provides 40 hours or 5 days of paid sick leave “up-front”.
- Other accrual plans may satisfy the law’s requirements.
California Law Prohibits Workplace Discrimination & Harassment – Shows recent legislative changes:
- Protecting employees and job applicants from discrimination based on the use of cannabis off the job and away from the workplace.
- Entitling employees to take up to 5 days of bereavement leave for the death of a family member.
- Entitling employees to take up to 4 days of leave following a reproductive loss.
Safety and Health Protection on the Job (Cal/OSHA) – Clarifies that employers who receive a Cal/OSHA citation must post both the citation and the included multi-language employee notification prominently at or near the place of the violation or unsafe condition for the same period of time.
