The Maryland Minimum Wage Act of 2014 entitles employees to greater legal protection and imposes new obligations on employers. Most notably, under the act the state’s minimum wage rate will increase over the next several years and eventually reach $10.10 per hour on July 1, 2018. Currently, the state minimum wage rate is $7.25 per hour. It increases to $8.00 per hour on January 1, 2015.
Maryland’s minimum wage rates through 2018 are included on the state’s new minimum wage posting. The new minimum wage posting also explains special minimum wage rates for tipped employees, employees of amusement and recreational establishments, and youth under 20.
The updated posting also describes overtime calculation generally and the weekly hour requirements for certain employees. In addition, the posting reflects recent changes in occupations, businesses and industries that are exempt from both minimum wage and overtime, and those that are exempt from overtime only. Under the act, more categories of employees and businesses are covered by minimum wage and overtime requirements, and fewer businesses qualify as overtime-exempt.
The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulations (DLLR) requires all employers to post the updated Minimum Wage and Overtime Law posting. Employers can comply using a Maryland Minimum Wage and Overtime Law Peel ‘N Post™ for your current Maryland All-On-One™ poster, or by displaying a new Maryland All-On-One Labor Law Poster™.
