Sunnyvale, CA joins several other Northern California communities in adopting a minimum wage rate that is higher than California’s $9.00 per hour minimum wage rate. Effective January 1, 2015, Sunnyvale’s minimum wage rate is $10.30 per hour. Beginning on January 1, 2016, and each year thereafter, Sunnyvale’s minimum wage will be adjusted for increases in the cost of living. Berkeley, Mountain View, Oakland, Richmond, San Francisco and San Jose also have established minimum wage rates that are higher than the state minimum wage rate and adjust each year for inflation.
Sunnyvale’s new minimum wage ordinance requires covered employers to pay the minimum wage rate to any employee who works at least two hours per week within city limits. The ordinance covers employers who are subject to the Sunnyvale Business License Tax or who maintain a facility in Sunnyvale. Covered employers are required to post in a conspicuous in the workplace or job site where any covered employee works the city’s Minimum Wage Official Notice. The Notice must be posted in English, Spanish and Chinese.
