OSHA regulations require that most workplaces maintain at least two emergency exits or fire exits to permit prompt evacuation of employees and other building occupants during an emergency. More than two emergency exits may be required depending on the number of employees and size of the building. Emergency exits must remain unlocked and accessible to allow for emergency evacuation in cases of fire, explosion, or other crisis.
Employers are also required to have a fire prevention plan and emergency action plan. Train your employees to recognize Fire Exit Posters and know the route to reach emergency exits.
Posting Requirements
Employers are required to post the Fire Exit Poster at each emergency exit. If the direction of the exit is not immediately apparent, the employer must post the Fire Exit – Left or Fire Exit – Right Posters indicating the direction of travel to the nearest exit. The line-of-sight to an exit sign must clearly be visible at all times. (29 C.F.R. 1910.37).
