What You Should Know About Asbestos

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ASBESTOS

Asbestos are naturally occurring minerals that are present in the environment as bundles of fibers. They are used by different industries, such as building and construction because of the heat, fire and chemical resistance. Asbestos are also popular in installation, fireproofing, and sound absorption.

In the late 1970’s, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission began banning the use of asbestos in wallboard patching compounds and fireplaces because fibers could be released into the environment during use. The problem with asbestos and human health is when fibers floating around air are breathed in, they can cause scarring and inflammation. This affects breathing and could lead to asbestosis, mesothelioma or even lung cancer. One of the most extreme examples of exposure was during the clean up of the World Trade Centers in 2001. Many people involved are still being followed to determine long term health consequences. While low levels of asbestos are relatively harmless, compliance posters, lowering your exposure level, and wearing protective equipment are a few ways to avoid taking in higher amounts of the mineral.
