June is National Safety Month –Train Employees, Display Safety Posters, Prevent Injuries

Safety posters reinforce training and provide easy reference information

National Safety Month is observed each year in June. The focus of the campaign is to reduce leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road and in our homes and communities.  In the workplace, employers and employees must adhere to state and federal health and safety training standards and follow best practices to keep their employees safe.

On the federal level, OSHA is responsible for setting workplace health and safety standards and training requirements. OSHA is guided by the principal “that training is an essential part of every employer’s safety and health program for protecting workers from injuries and illnesses.” (OSHA 2254 – 1998) OSHA explains that “an effective program of safety and health training for workers can result in fewer injuries and illnesses, better morale, and lower insurance premiums, among other benefits.” (Id.)

Training deficits can be gleaned from OSHA’s most-cited violations for 2014, which include:

  • Fall Protection in Construction (1926.501)
  • Hazard Communication (1910.1200)
  • Scaffolding in Construction (1926.451)
  • Respiratory Protection (1910.134)
  • Lockout/Tagout (1910.147)
  • Ladders in Construction (1926.1053)
  • Machine Guarding (1910.212)
