The Pennsylvania Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA) mandates that nearly all public spaces and workplaces be smoke-free. This requirement covers offices, schools, retail stores, museums, hospitals, and mass transit (including vehicles and stations), as well as at least 75% of hotel and motel rooms.

Exemptions and Compliance

While the law is broad, certain exceptions apply, including:

  • Tobacco shops and cigar bars.

  • Designated areas of casino gaming floors.

  • Specific private bars.

  • Private residences (excluding those licensed for childcare).

Management at all affected establishments—including restaurants and bars—is responsible for developing and implementing formal smoke-free policies to ensure full compliance with the Act.

Posting Requirement

Property owners, managers, and operators in control of smoke-free areas are required to display “No Smoking” signs. Failure to post proper signage may result in fines ranging from $250 to $1,000.
