Alabama No Smoking Sign Requirements:

Alabama law (Ala. Code § 22-15A-7) requires No Smoking signs to be clearly visible and conspicuously posted in all public places where smoking is prohibited. Signs should be posted at:

  • Facility entrances
  • Doorways leading to common areas
  • Other locations that are readily visible to employees and patrons

Smoking is prohibited in the following public places:

  • Places of employment:
    • Smoking is prohibited in all common areas (with limited exceptions for designated smoking areas).
    • Employers may designate the entire workplace as smoke-free.
    • Employees may designate their individual work areas as nonsmoking.
  • Childcare and healthcare facilities.
  • Elevators.
  • Public transportation.
  • Government buildings (except private offices).
  • Restrooms and service lines.
  • Public areas of aquariums, galleries, libraries, and museums.
  • Common areas of multi-unit residential and commercial buildings.
  • Polling places.
  • K–12 schools, school facilities, and indoor school events.
  • Retail establishments (excluding restaurants), except areas not open to the public.
