Employment Discrimination
The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) has released new mandatory state and county labor law posting requirements. The state’s Employment Discrimination is Unlawful posting has been updated to include two new protected categories: “Ancestry” and “Gender Identity.” Ancestry compliments the category of “National Origin,” and “Gender Identity” was added by a new law (SB 212) effective Oct. 1, 2014. The term “Sex” discrimination was also modified by removing a term from the category description.
County Minimum Wage Laws
The Department has also released two new mandatory Minimum Wage posters for Montgomery County and Prince George’s County. The Minimum Wage posters cover the current county minimum rates, the minimum wage rate increases effective October 1, 2014, and the minimum wage rates effective each year through Oct. 1, 2017. The posters also describe covered employees, overtime rates, sub-minimum wage rates, industry and occupational exemptions, recordkeeping requirements and complaint information.
Who must post?
Employers of 15 or more employees must post the state anti-discrimination notice. Montgomery County employers with two or more employees working in the county must post the county Minimum Wage Law. All Prince George’s County employers with employees covered by Maryland’s Wage and Hour Law must post the county Minimum Wage Law.
