Athletes are prone to heat illness when exercising in hot and humid conditions. Staff and athletes must take precautions and recognize the symptoms of heat illnesses. The Federal Heat Illness Poster for Athletes can be used to support training goals.

How to Prevent Heat Illness
- Before beginning the athletic program participants should release medical and physical history
- Have all athletes undergo a physical exam before participating in the activity
- Take body weight before/after exercise (determines loss of fluids)
- Ensure athletes are drinking water/keeping hydrated during the activity
- Inform athletes of risk factors
- Substitute athletes regularly during hot/humid days
- Know what to do if an emergency arises
How to Respond to Symptoms
- Move athlete to a cool shaded area
- Loosen/remove heavy clothing
- Have athlete drink cool water
- Cool athletes body by fanning or spraying with cool mist
- Place ice packs under the arms/groin
- If medical assistance is necessary, call 911 and provide first aid
