Fair Housing Discrimination
Under the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, it is unlawful to refuse or deny housing, or to make different conditions because of a person’s race, color, sex, familial status, religious creed, ancestry, age, national origin, disability, use of a guide or support animal because of blindness, deafness or physical handicap of the user or because the user is a handler or trainer of support or guide animals. Examples of unlawful discrimination may include:
- saying a home is rented when it is still available because they don’t want to rent to someone of the applicant’s race;
- setting different terms and conditions for sale or rental of a property due to a person having a disability;
- charging a fee for service or support animals;
- denying maintenance requests because of age; or
- not providing the same services to an individual who filed a discrimination complaint in retaliation for filing a complaint.
Posting Requirement
The Pennsylvania Fair Housing Practices Poster is required to be prominently posted in a well-lighted, easily accessible place in the office, model home, sample apartment or other places of business where negotiations or agreements are customarily made. (Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, Section 5)
Removing, defacing, covering up or destroying this poster is a violation of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code.
