Informing individuals of prohibited conduct and the consequences of breaking the law can help deter fraud and encourage fraud reporting.
Under the Code of Virginia, it is illegal to knowingly use documentation which you know to contain a false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement in connection with a workers’ compensation award, or to aid and abet a person in the same. It is also illegal to obtain money or other property by any false pretense and with intent to defraud.
The consequences for committing Workers’ Compensation fraud include imprisonment, confinement in jail, and/or fines of up to $2,500.
Fraud may be reported to the Virginia State Police Insurance Fraud Program, either by telephone or on the web. Tips leading to arrests are eligible for rewards of up to $25,000.
