Bloomfield Latest New Jersey City to Pass Paid Sick Leave Ordinance

Bloomfield is the ninth New Jersey city to pass a paid sick leave law. Under the new ordinance, effective June 30, 2015, employees working in the city of Bloomfield will start earning one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked.  Employers with 10 or more employees are not required to provide more than 40 hours of paid sick time in a calendar year. Employers with less than 10 employees are not required to provide more than 24 hours of paid sick time in a calendar year. For employers with less than 10 employees, but with child care employees, home health care employees, and food service employees, are required to provide up to 40 hours of paid sick time.

Employees will begin to accrue sick time on the first day of employment or if already hired, when the ordinance takes effect. It will be until the 90th day of employees’ employment or when ordinance takes effect that employees may use accrued paid sick time.

Employers subject to the ordinance must give employees a notice regarding their rights under the ordinance. The notices must be in English and any other language the company uses to communicate with employees. Employers must also display a poster in a conspicuous place in the workplace with the required information. Any violation to the provisions of the ordinance can result in fines of up to $2,000.
