Elizabeth’s Paid Sick Time Law is Now Effective

As previously shared in our Compliance Poster Company blog, Elizabeth’s Paid Sick Time Law goes into effect today, March 2, 2016. Elizabeth has become the 10th municipality in the state of New Jersey to require private employers to provide paid sick time to their employees. Under the new local law (Ordinance # 4617), employers who employ 10 or more employees are not required to provide more than 40 hours of paid sick time in a calendar year. Employers with fewer than 10 employees are not required to provide more than 24 hours of paid sick time in a calendar year, except for child care, home health care, and food service employees who are entitled up to 40 hours of paid sick time. Employees may begin to use their accrued sick time on their 90th day of employment or when the law becomes effective if already hired.

Covered employers must provide written notice to their employees about their rights under the new law when an individual becomes employed or as soon as practicable. Employers are also required to display a poster with the notice of the ordinance in a conspicuous place in the workplace. Both the written notice and poster must be in English and in any language that is the first language of at least 10% of the employer’s workforce.

Compliance Poster Company will continue to monitor Elizabeth’s mandatory paid sick leave poster, which should be released shortly. Make sure to check!
