Who should post the Violence Against Employees Warning Sign?

  • The Louisiana Violence Against Employees Warning Sign is designed to prevent workplace violence against employees in customer-facing jobs primarily in retail and food service establishments.
  • The sign was developed pursuant to legislation enacted in 2026, known as the “Louisiana Behind the Counter Act” (R.S. 23:271-274), increasing criminal fines and jail sentences for offenders convicted of committing workplace violence against covered employees.
  • The sign warns would-be offenders that violence, threats, or abuse against an employee is a crime and may result in arrest and criminal prosecution.

Who is a covered employee?

Employees who work behind check-out counters, service counters, drive-through windows, customer service desks, or other points of transaction between employees and customers.

How does the law define workplace violence?

“Workplace violence” means any act of violence or credible threat of violence, including but not limited to assault, battery, robbery, intimidation, verbal abuse, threats with a weapon, or any conduct that places an employee in reasonable fear of physical harm or is directed at an employee while he is performing his duties at a regulated establishment.
