Steps for choking
When to know to take action with a choking victim
• Victim is unable to cough
• Victim cannot speak
• Victim is unable to cry
• Victim cannot breathe
Choking technique for victim
Follow this two step approach to resolve choking
• Give 5 back blows
• Give 5 abdominal thrusts
Repetition of previous steps is key
Repeat the back blows and abdominal thrusts until:
• Object is forced out
• Person can forcefully breathe
• Person becomes unconscious
If person becomes unconscious lower them to the ground and call 911
CPR – another life saving tool
If your victims is not breathing you must administer CPR
• Give 30 chest compressions (push hard, fast in middle of chest)
• Need to make sure to have at least 100 compressions per minute
• Give 2 rescue breaths
Continue with chest compressions and breaths
Do not stop CPR unless you see visible signs of the following
• Obvious sign of breathing
• AED is ready for use
• Another trained person takes over
• Scene becomes unsafe
Remember if CPR breaths do not raise chest, retilt head and give another breath
