Workers in Quebec Canada to See Increase In Minimum Wage

Effective May 1, 2011 Minimum Wage Rates in Quebec Canada Increase

Workers in Quebec will see larger paychecks effective May 1, 2011 when the minimum wage rates increase. Currently the general and clothing industry rates are $9.50 per hour, and $8.25 per hour for employees receiving tips. May 1, the rates will be as follows:

  • $9.65 per hour for general
  • $9.65 per hour for the clothing industry, and
  • $8.35 per hour for employees receiving tips

With the increase, Quebec will be have the fourth-highest minimum wage rate in the country. The Quebec Labour Minister Lise Theriault said, “We had to deal with the fact that to improve the financial situation of those most vulnerable and to support the economy and the jobs associated with them, despite the current economic climate, we had to be cautious.” The increase in the minimum wage rate is said to affect about 292,000 workers, especially women.
