Every year, as state and federal legislatures are back in full swing, minimum wage becomes the subject of new legislation and heated debate. Early indications are that 2013 will be no different.
This week, in his State of the Union address President Barack Obama called for an increase in the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $9. He also proposed tying future increases in the federal minimum wage to inflation.
Currently, 19 states and the District of Columbia already have minimum wages set above the federal rate of $7.25 per hour and ten states index their minimum wages to the cost of living. As of Feb. 13, 2013, 23 states have introduced legislation to increase the state minimum wage or provide for automatic adjustments to the state minimum wage to reflect increases in the cost of living.
