EXPOSURE TO BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS

Bloodborne pathogens come in many forms. Some of the most common are: hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus – an AIDS-causing virus. These pathogens are present in the blood and infectious, causing disease in human beings. If exposed, a worker is at risk for serious or life-threatening illnesses.  By displaying a federal OSHA poster and following standard requirements, employers can help protect workers exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials.

Standard requirements for employers include: an exposure control plan listing job classifications of workers that have occupational exposure; updating the plan to reflect changes in task, procedures, and positions; implement the use of universal precautions; identifying and using engineering controls or devices that isolate or remove blood-borne pathogen hazards from the workplace, identifying and ensuring the use of work practice controls to identify the practices that reduce the possibility of exposure; providing personal protective equipment; making hepatitis B vaccinations available to all workers with occupational exposure; and making post-exposure evaluation and follow-up available to any occupationally exposed worker.
