California’s Minimum Wage Earners Get Bigger Paychecks In 2014

California’s Governor Jerry Brown, signed a significant piece of legislation increasing the state’s minimum wage rate to $9.00 per hour effective July 1, 2014. But wait…there will be an additional rate increase to $10.00 on January 1, 2016. The minimum wage debate has been fueled by supporters, top California lawmakers, as well as the opposition, some members of the business community. Whichever side you favor, it’s hard to ignore all of the hype. But all was laid to rest Wednesday September 25, 2013 when Governor Brown actually took pen to paper and signed CA Assembly Bill 10 into law.

Californians have had to wait six years for this minimum wage increase. Back in 2007 the wage rate was at $7.50 per hour. Then in 2008 that rate increased by 6.7% to $8.00 per hour. Since 2008 many pieces of minimum wage legislation were drafted but none successfully made it through the system until now. The jump from $8.00 to $10.00 in 2016 equals a 25% increase.

There is still time for Governor Brown to sign additional pieces of legislation because he has until October 13, 2013 to sign or veto bills. Compliance Poster Company’s Legal Research and Compliance Department will keep you abreast of any developments as they occur.
