What is heat illness?
Workers are vulnerable to heat illness when exposed to extreme heat or while engaging in strenuous activity in moderate heat. When workers do not follow best practices to stay cool and hydrated, they may experience heat rash, heat cramps, or heat exhaustion. Heat stroke, the most serious form of heat illness, can cause confusion, fainting, seizures, and even death.
How can I prevent heat illness in the workplace?
The best way to prevent heat illness in the workplace is to establish a comprehensive heat illness prevention program:
  • Train workers on risk conditions for heat exposure, how to avoid heat stress, and how to respond if they or another worker experiences heat illness.
  • Ensure that workers have access to shaded or air-conditioned rest areas and cool drinking water.
  • Adapt work and rest schedules to allow workers to acclimate to the heat.
  • Monitor workers for signs and symptoms of heat stress.
Why should I use Heat Illness Prevention materials?
Under the federal OSH Act, it is the employer’s responsibility to maintain a safe and healthy workplace. Employers must provide information on potential hazards and train workers on injury and illness prevention.
If workers are exposed to extreme heat as a result of their job or location, providing heat illness materials can prevent workplace slowdowns and even save lives. CPC’s heat illness prevention posters and pamphlets can be used to support training programs and remind workers of best practices while working in extreme heat.
