As you may already know June is National Safety Month, so it comes as no surprise that Cal/OSHA is targeting construction sites for safety rules compliance. Specifically, Cal/OSHA is targeting construction sites in Northern California or more precisely San Francisco because of recent fatal accidents in the region. As discussed in a prior blog, it is an employer’s legal responsibility to protect workers, identify safety hazards and mitigate them in an effort to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses.
Construction sites are particularly vulnerable because of the nature of the safety challenges. Employers must be diligent and develop strong safety programs and train workers on following safety procedures. Just take a moment to think about some of the major hazards at construction sites.
Did you come up with any of the following…?
- Open trenches
- Collapsing equipment or ground conditions
- Scaffolding
- Moving equipment at ground levels
- High elevations
- Lack of or non-use of personal protective equipment
- Slips, trips and falls
Statistics reveal that falls are actually the leading cause of death for construction workers which is why federal OSHA has designated June 2-6 as “National Safety Stand-Down” week. Visit the website to participate and share your safety story.
As Cal/OSHA inspectors visit construction sites you can bet they will be checking for fall protection systems, use of and maintenance of personal protective equipment and effective training and reinforcement of training received. Compliance Poster Company has a full line of construction safety products to reinforce training employees should be receiving.
