Earthquake Preparedness

Recent world events have brought earthquake preparedness into the spotlight. As we have seen, an earthquake can hit anywhere in the world at any time. There have been major earthquakes in the past few weeks in California, Mexico, and of course Haiti. All employers should make sure that their employees are safe in the event of an earthquake.

To prepare your business, you should have:
Radio and flashlights with extra batteries
Emergency two way radios
Cell phone
Enough canned or dehydrated food to last 72 hours
Water- 1 gallon per person per day
Toolbox with basic tools, rope, and an axe
First aid kit
Fully charged and tested fire extinguisher

During an earthquake, if possible, take cover under a heavy piece of furniture. Stay away from windows and hanging objects. Protect your head and neck with your arms, and remain there until after the shaking subsides.

After an earthquake, check for water and gas leaks, and turn off utilities at the source if necessary. Put out any fires, and eliminate fire hazards. Since gas leaks are possible, do not light matches.
