2011 Vermont Minimum Wage Increase

Vermont will raise minimum wage for 2011

The Vermont Department of Labor has announced that the state’s 2011 minimum wage rate for non-tipped employees will increase to $8.15 per hour, effective January 1, 2011. The 2011 basic wage rate for tipped employees will also increase to $3.95 per hour, with the maximum tip credit up to $4.20 per hour. The 2011 minimum wage rate for non-tipped employees reflects a 9 cent increase from the current rate of $8.06, while the 2011 basic wage rate for tipped employees is 4 cents more than the current rate of $3.91.

Vermont’s minimum wage is tied to the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) which rose 1.1% during the last year. Under legislation passed in 2007, Vermont’s minimum wage may rise annually by up to 5 percent, but only if the U.S. CPI increases more than that. (21 V.S.A. Sec. 384) Vermont’s 2011 minimum rate is lower than the 2011 rates of just 5 other states: Connecticut, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon and Washington as well as the District of Columbia.
