Virginia recently passed a new law that adds truck stops to the business operations that must post notice of the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The notice is intended to alert possible witnesses or victims to a national resource center they can call for assistance in reporting crimes or obtaining help.

The notice must be posted in the same location where other employee notices required by state or federal law are posted. The law goes into effect July 1, 2013 and an employer that operates a truck stop and fails to post the notice is subject to a $100 civil penalty.

Businesses in certain adult entertainment businesses are also required to post the human trafficking poster under a state law adopted last year. These operations are subject to a $500 penalty for failure to post the required notice.

The official Virginia Department of Labor and Industry Human Trafficking Hotline Poster (#46600) meets the notice requirements of all covered businesses. Encourage companies, including your own, to take steps to investigate and eliminate labor and human trafficking in their supply chains and to publish this important awareness poster.
