In order to counter a $2 billion campaign in advertisements and promotions for alcoholic beverages, health and public safety advocates have tried to promote balanced information about these substances. These efforts include a successful campaign that called for container warnings, as well as proposals for health and safety messages in advertisements. States like Florida require the posting of labor law posters wherever alcoholic beverages are sold. This way, the public is educated about the health and safety risks associated with drinking. Warning signs are a good way to supplement ongoing alcohol-education programs and reinforce health notices required on alcoholic beverage containers. Studies have shown that federal compliance posters increase awareness of alcohol risks. In Florida, there was a noticeable increase in awareness of alcohol addiction among middle and high school students, from 25% to 95%, after warnings about addiction were introduced in the 80s. State and federal law posters are an effective and inexpensive way to educate the public.
Some statics about alcohol related problems include: birth defects caused when drinking while pregnant; an increase in the number of fetal alcohol syndrome cases since 1979; increased economic costs of $112 billion a year, due to alcohol use; and alcohol as the leading cause of death and injury among teens and young adults ages 15-24.
