The amendments further strengthen the ordinance making it unlawful for employers to discriminate based on pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions. Additionally, employers are required to provide pregnant employees with reasonable accommodations such as restroom breaks and job restructuring, to name a few.
One important element of the law concerns notification. Philadelphia employers are required to provide written notice as well as display notice to all new and existing employees by April 2014. Employers should also review employee handbooks, training, and organizational policies to conform to the law.
