Kentuckians earning minimum wage may see an increase in their pay starting this July, if Bill H2 is passed. The current minimum wage rate is $7.25 per hour and may increase to $8.20 per hour beginning July 1st, if bill is approved. The bill would also increase the rate to $9.15 per hour on July 1, 2016, and $10.10 per hour on July 2017. Individuals working for retail stores, service industries, hotels, motels, and restaurants making less than $500,000 a year for five years would be exempted. Also exempted from state’s minimum wage law are tipped employees, baby-sitters, workers in agriculture, and domestic service, among other industries.
A provision that guarantees equal pay for men and women was introduced in the proposed bill. That is, employers may not pay wages to any employee at a rate less than the rate at which he or she pays any employee of the opposite sex.
