New Law – Tennessee’s No Firearms Posters to Be Revised

42702[1]On March 23, 2016, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed Bill H 682. Under the new law, the Tennessee Code Annotated is amended by changing how business owners and employers prohibit weapons on their premises. An individual, corporation, business entity, or government entity may continue to display a notice that prohibits weapon possession on their property or business premises.

The notice prohibiting weapon possession must be visible to an individual entering the building or property. Business owners and employers may have a duplicate notice in any language their customers or employees use. However, the notices must now include the phrase “NO FIREARMS ALLOWED.” The phrase needs to measure at least one inch high and eight inches wide.  Furthermore, the notice must have an image of a firearm inside a circle with a diagonal line through the circle. The entire image must be at least four inches high and four inches wide. The diagonal line through the circle must be at a 45 degree angle from the upper left to the lower right side of the circle.

These changes must be implemented by July 1, 2016. Individuals, business entities, or government entities that had notices prohibiting weapon possession before January 1, 2015, have until January 1, 2018 to replace the notices that meet the new posting requirements.
