Changes effective as of January 1, 2024:
Your Rights Under Illinois Employment Laws
  • Minimum wage rate increases:
    • Minimum wage rate: $14.00 per hour.
    • Tipped employee minimum wage rate: $8.40 per hour.
    • Youth minimum wage rate: $12.00 per hour.
  • Violent Crime Victims’ Leave – Provides up to 2 additional weeks of leave if a family or household member dies in a crime of violence.
  • New Paid Leave – Provides up to 5 days of paid leave per year that can be used for any reason.
Paid Leave for All Workers Act Notice
  • Employees may take up to 40 hours of paid leave per year. Leave  accrues at the rate of 1 hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked.
  • Employees may take leave for any reason of their own choosing.
  • Employees are protected from retaliation by their employers for exercising their paid leave rights.
  • Employers in violation of the law are subject to civil penalties and any amount the employee is entitled to recover.
Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA)
  • Employees are entitled to take up to 2 weeks of leave for reasons related to the death of a family or household member due to a crime of violence.
  • Employees can use the leave to:
    • Attend the funeral or alternative memorial service held for the family or household member
    • Make arrangements necessitated by the family or household member’s death
    • Grieve the family or household member’s death
  • Clarifies the types of documentation that an employee may provide to an employer to substantiate the leave.
Digital Posting Requirement
Illinois law (HB 3733) now requires employers to provide employees with electronic access to IDOL postings. Employees can access the postings by scanning the QR code added to the Illinois All-On-One Poster and Mobile Poster Pak.
