Captive Meetings: Mandatory Workplace Communications
Pursuant to Senate Bill 702, employers are prohibited from taking adverse employment action against employees who decline to attend employer-sponsored meetings regarding religious or political matters. The law does not limit employers’ right to conduct meetings involving religious or political matters if attendance or listening is voluntary.Minimum Wage
The Minimum Wage posting has been revised with new minimum wage rates effective January 1, 2024:
  • General minimum wage rate: $14.15 per hour
  • Direct cash wage rate for service employees: $7.08 per hour
  • Salary threshold for overtime: $816.35 per week
Regulation of Employment
The Regulation of Employment posting was revised to clarify that an employee who leaves the job must be paid in full no later than the employee’s next established payday. The payment must include accrued vacation pay and/or Earned Paid Leave.
Who must post?
  • Every employer in Maine is required to post a notice informing employees of their rights under the employer-sponsored meetings or communications law. (MRSA Title 26, Section 600-B)
  • Every employer in Maine is required to post the Minimum Wage and Regulation of Employment postings in a conspicuous place on or about the premises where employees are employed. (MRSA Title 26, Section 42-B)
