This just in from the California State Legislature–
California businesses will soon be required to display the NEW Human Trafficking poster. Human trafficking is considered to be one of the fastest growing criminal industries. Governor Brown gets California on board by signing a series of bills cracking down on human trafficking in the state.
One important law makes it mandatory for certain businesses to post the Human Trafficking Notice in plain view near the entrance of the business or in another location in clear view of the public and employees. The notice must be posted in English, Spanish and in one other language that is the most widely spoken language in the county where the business is located.
So what businesses does this new law affect?
It affects:
- Most liquor stores,
- Restaurants that sell alcoholic beverages,
- Adult or sexually-oriented businesses,
- Primary airports,
- Intercity passenger rail or light rail stations,
- Bus stations,
- Truck stops,
- Emergency rooms with general acute care hospitals,
- Urgent care centers,
- Privately operated job recruitment centers,
- Roadside rest areas, and
- Massage parlors and spas (excluding sole proprietors).
Businesses that fail to comply with the law can be liable for a civil penalty of $500 for a first offense and $1,000 for each subsequent offense.
The law is effective January 1, 2013, but the Department has until April 1, 2013 to develop the notice. Compliance Poster Company’s got you covered!
